Atropine is used as pre-anaesthetic medication.

  • Ether vapours are too irritant to the respiratory passage when used as
    volatile general anaesthetic.
  • It causes excessive secretion of mucous in the bronchi, lachrymal glands and nasopharynx. These secretions interfere with normal respiration as well as with the anaesthetic process.
  • To overcome this disadvantage of ether, antisecretory agent like atropine is combined with ether.
  • Atropine blocks all secretions and assists in anaesthesia.
