  • If aspirin is taken on an empty stomach, it causes gastric irritation, nausea and vomiting.
  • It may also cause G.I. bleeding.
  • Aspirin also increases the secretion of HCl in the stomach, indirectly by decreasing the prostaglandin levels. This results in ulceration.
  • Aspirin when administered after a meal or with sodium bicarbonate, the acid secreted in the stomach gets neutralized by sodium bicarbonate.
  • This avoids the gastric complications mentioned above.
