- If aspirin is taken on an empty stomach, it causes gastric irritation, nausea and vomiting.
- It may also cause G.I. bleeding.
- Aspirin also increases the secretion of HCl in the stomach, indirectly by decreasing the prostaglandin levels. This results in ulceration.
- Aspirin when administered after a meal or with sodium bicarbonate, the acid secreted in the stomach gets neutralized by sodium bicarbonate.
- This avoids the gastric complications mentioned above.
